Mother Daughter Statement
During a time of uncertainty, I went to the one person who could help me. My mother. And together, we embarked on a journey, in which she patiently taught me to sew.

The process has allowed me to reconcile with these changes, becoming a way for me to reconnect with two pillars of my identity: femininity and nature. I found solace in the learning process, embracing womanhood and deepening relationships with my surroundings. In a time of darkness, my Mom gave me what I needed most: a way to heal. The act of sewing gave me connection. A connection to nature, my mother, and myself. The act gave me purpose.

Using my skills in printmaking to create nature-based textiles, my work examines the tradition of quilt making and its relationship to our transitioning environments. Under the guidance of my mother, I learned to quilt, using the process as an informal rite of passage from childhood to adulthood. The process has become a way for us to cope with our shifting lives, slowly allowing us to reconcile with recent loss. When making quilts together, we use the collaboration as a transactional process. A mother passing on her skillset, preparing her daughter for these times of transition. In my most recent body of work, you’ll find a variety of textile compositions, intertwining harmony and imperfection.
